Abbreviation: | ScB |
Genitive: | Sceptri Brandenburgi |
Origin: | Gottfried Kirch, 1688 |
German astronomer Gottfried Kirch (1639–1710) tried to impress various dignitaries of the day by creating constellations in their honour. Sceptrum Brandenburgicum is such a case as it represented the sceptre used by the royal family of the Mark of Brandenburg. Located in a bend of the river Eridanus, a truncated version of its title lives on in the name of the star 53 Eri, Sceptrum.
